Woman accidentally spends bitcoin fortune on dark web&
To begin this story on a very easy understandable note, we will first define bitcoin
Bitcoin is a decentralised digital currency, without a single administrator like a central bank. It can be sent from a user to another on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the help or need of intermediaries.
In the simplest of terms, bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that can be used and traded to make purchases online with some proper planning. Although they have been around for over a decade, they have become popular in the last few years.
Bitcoins are very popular now and are used in just about all kinds of online transactions. But until a few years ago, they weren’t so popular even though many invested in them. Many bitcoin users made some huge mistakes that cost them dearly.
Recently, one writer has opened up about how she accidentally spent her bitcoin fortune purchasing drugs from the dark web.
Jia Tolentino recounted her tragic tale while appearing on The Reply All podcast in 2018.
Jia told the host that she had bought around $80 worth of Bitcoin in 2012 and spent some of it buying drugs. But after that, she had no idea what had become of her bitcoin earnings for the next six years.
According to reports, the bitcoins she bought in 2012 would be worth a whopping £456,253 in 2021.
The podcast show support team managed to track Jia’s lost bitcoins and calculated that it was approximately worth $2,13,000 in 2018.
Later, it was found that most of the bitcoins were used up to buy drugs from the dark web.
In the end, Jia, who used the digital money to buy weed and MDMA was left with just 0,00209 bitcoin, acording to a UNILAD report.
“This really hurts to look at. This really hurts to look at. I really… wow. It’s so embarrassing. You know this is like my mom was always like, ‘Jia you shouldn’t do any drugs,” she said.
