Ryan McMahon proposes $600,000 for deputy body cams: Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said Monday he will ask legislators to approve spending $606,000 this year to outfit sheriff’s road deputies with body cameras, the first step in a 5-year program estimated to cost about $3 million. The request, which is expected to pass the legislature on Tuesday, is 36% less than the $954,700 a year Sheriff Gene Conway proposed in a last-minute letter that McMahon received the same day.

NY man avoids eviction for 23 years, still lives in house he doesn’t own for free: A Long Island man has lived in a three-bedroom home since 1998, despite only making one mortgage payment. He’s used lawsuits and the US Bankruptcy Code’s “automatic stay” rules to stay there free for more than two decades.

Bitcoin mining in Upstate New York: By next year, owners of a gas-fired power plant on Seneca Lake hope to be producing enough electricity to power 85,000 homes, but much of it will be used to power up to 27,000 computers for virtual currency called bitcoin. But is it just more hot air?

Coronavirus Update

NY ending nearly all Covid capacity limits, but there’s a catch: Starting May 19, there will no longer be capacity limits for houses of worship, bars and restaurants, museums, retail stores, gyms and fitness centers, amusement parks and family entertainment centers, hair salons, spas, barber shops, offices and more, Gov. Cuomo said Monday. However, businesses must continue to maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet between patrons, so spacing requirements will likely continue limiting the number of people many can have inside.

Oswego Harborfest canceled again: Harborfest and the City of Oswego’s Independence Day Parade have both been canceled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19 concerns. Oswego will still have a downtown block party on Sunday, July 4, 2021, with a fireworks display over the Oswego River.

Take me out to the ball game: The Syracuse Mets will host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for their home opener Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. And many of the Mets will be taking their first cuts or making their first pitches that count in almost two years. “Everybody’s fired up,” said Syracuse pitcher Corey Oswalt, who played in New York last season.

Syracuse lacrosse sliding toward low point: SU head coach John Desko’s troubles go beyond Chase Scanlon, as Brent Axe points out the Orange lacrosse team has allowed 20 or more goals in two games during a season for the first time since 1977, and lost four games by at least seven goals this season, something it hasn’t done since 1975.
