NFL Picks — Rivera Hopes Allen’s the Answer For Washington Football Team

We’re not kidding BetAnySports customers one bit when we say there has been nothing but drama around the nation’s capital when it comes to its pro football enterprise. Between Daniel Snyder’s battles with Native American groups and minority stockholders, which led to a name change, to the accusations of sexual harassment, to the pending lawsuits, to Ron Rivera’s cancer diagnosis, to the situation regarding a possible trade of quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who’s been benched, this thing is a soap opera.

We don’t know where this whole thing is going to lead. But the next step is a game against the New York Giants that begins at 1 PM ET on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

BetAnySports NFL Line: Giants -2.5 (-115), Total 43

We don’t know if we’re going to bore you with background here, but the WFT (that’s how we’ll refer to them) has bent from time to time to its owner’s wishes when it comes to drafting players. One such case may have been the selection of Haskins in last year’s first round of the draft. The general consensus is that this was done because Haskins attended prep school with Snyder’s son.

He was not ready to step into a West Coast offense, which they had at the time with Jay Gruden, as he had started just a year at Ohio State. Gruden didn’t really want him around, but after he was fired, Bill Callahan did the best he could with him.

He wasn’t Rivera’s guy either, and we don’t know whether the owner talked with the coach about that one. But Haskins wound up starting anyway, and things looked up after the opening win against Philadelphia.

Gradually Haskins wore out his welcome, not only with poor play and mistakes, but also with attitude. You just don’t celebrate a 300-yard day in the locker room when your team suffered a tough loss, as was the case after a game with the Ravens a couple of weeks ago. That was the last straw, and he was soon benched for Kyle Allen, who played in Rivera’s offense last year at Carolina.

Now we would assume management was in favor of trading Haskins; after all, they gave his agent permission to seek a deal. But the owner most likely didn’t want that, so Rivera told reporters that he was not giving up on the young man.

Oh yes, some of the drama also includes Alex Smith, heroically back from his horrific knee injury, but unable to do much at the helm when brought in for a wobbling Allen last week. The WFT had 108 total yards from scrimmage against the Rams

So there’s a lot of stuff to deal with for a coach (Rivera) who has been receiving cancer treatments.

The Giants seemed to have a lot of life in Dallas last week, but the way they lost was a heart-breaker. And when bad teams are involved we wonder if there is going to be a big carry-over.

We also consider that Devonta Freeman has become somewhat useful as the Giants try to fill the vacuum left by Saquon Barkley’s injury (87 scrimmage yards last week). Or that New York isn’t completely without weapons.

Yes, Kyle Allen knows Rivera’s scheme. He knew it last year too, but didn’t do a lot with it, having thrown 17 TD’s with 16 INT’s for the Panthers.

This is a spot where the winless Giants can get off the schneid. It may be one of the best opportunities they’ll get. We swallow hard, because they have covered just three of their last 18 in the Meadowlands, but we’ll lay the points with the Giants (we almost choked when we said that).
