Last week in the Meadowlands, it was “No Jimmy G, no problem” for the San Francisco 49ers as they blew past the New York Jets with Nick Mullens at the helm. And the Southern Miss alum will be running the offense again as the Niners square off against the Philadelphia Eagles at 8:20 PM ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Remember that BetAnySports can give you reduced juice on this game, as well as the chance to place wagers in real time with Sports Betting Prime.
The Niners are going to be without Jimmy Garoppolo for a second straight week here, as he suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 against the Jets. So coach Kyle Shanahan turns to Mullens, who was able to throw for 343 yards when returning to MetLife Stadium against the Giants in a 36-9 win. In addressing what might happen if Mullens becomes a free agent, which he can do after this season, general manager John Lynch said, “Nick, if he keeps playing like that, he’ll make things tough on a lot of people, and he’ll be coveted. We certainly covet him.”
Out this week for the 49ers are Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, Tevin Coleman, Richard Sherman, Raheem Mostert, Dee Ford and Jordan Reed, among others.
The good news on the injury front for San Francisco is that tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are expected back in the lineup this week. And RB Jerick McKinnon, who left last Sunday’s game, could play as well.
In BetAnySports‘ Sunday night football betting odds on this game, which will be seen on NBC, the Niners are a solid favorite:
San Francisco 49ers -9
Philadelphia Eagles +9
Over 45.5 points -110
Under 45.5 points -110
The Eagles sought to get faster at the wide receiver position, but things haven’t turned out the way they wanted. marquise Goodwin, a world-class sprinter, has opted out of the season because of virus concerns. First-round draft pick Jalen Reagor has a thumb injury. John Hightower, another rookie, is said to be suffering from an “illness.” Quez Watkins (another Southern Miss guy) has an injury. Alshon Jeffery has a Lisfranc injury in his foot. DeSean Jackson has a hamstring issue that will keep him out.
And on top of this, tight end Dallas Goedert has a broken ankle, which means that the Eagles can’t set up in their two-tight end alignment.
So as you can see, although the 49ers are the team that had to sit ten starters last week, the Eagles are the team that may be affected more by the injury problems.
Yes, we know that the last two opponents were the Jets and Giants, who are shaping up as two of the worst in the NFL. But still, you have to have a lot of talent and lot of coaching to be able to dominate opponents with so many people out, as the Niners have. And we say that especially as the new (and Shanahan says, dangerous) MetLife Stadium turf was giving the coach the creeps to the point where he dreaded going back there. What they did was impressive. What they did was overachieve.
By contrast, what you have is an Eagles team that is gaining just 4.5 yards per play, with Wentz completing less than 60% of his passes, with SIX interceptions. His QB rating is the lowest in the league among starting quarterbacks.
He won’t get “well’ this week. We’d like to be able to offer a recommendation on the Eagles, with all those points, but the Niners are so mentally tough right now that they are not letting anything bother them. Lay it.
