Well, Aaron Rodgers may not have done as much damage in Minneapolis as some of the rioters, but his presence was felt just the same. After a huge 2020 opener, he gets back to work in Matt LaFleur’s offense as his Green Bay Packers take on the Detroit Lions, who suffered a gut-wrenching come-from-ahead defeat last week in what many consider to be another nail in Matt Patricia’s coffin.

Rodgers led the Green Bay offense to 31 first downs, 522 yards and 43 points in a nine-point win over the Vikings. Of course, we understand that this is not the Minnesota defense we had gotten used to, but one that is, well, “rebuilding” itself. But you know, it’s the same situation with the Lions. Everyone is learning to play together.
Detroit looked pretty golden last week as they carried a 23-6 lead into the fourth quarter against Chicago, then proceeded to give up 21 unanswered points to the Bears to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It was the tenth different time under Patricia that this team has taken a lead into the final period and lost the game. Lions management is considering bringing in Alec Baldwin to tell this coach that the coffee is only for closers.
In the NFL football odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Packers are the favorites:
Green Bay Packers -6.5
Detroit Lions +6.5
Over 49.5 points -110
Under 49.5 points -110
Matthew Stafford is still Matthew Stafford, to a considerable degree, although he is not the “Captain Comeback” he was prior to Patricia’s arrival. Last week hew threw for 297 yards and managed to do that without top receiver Kenny Golladay, who was out with a hamstring. Although he hasn’t been practicing, the Detroit staff is hopeful he can play this weekend, although things are “iffy” as of this moment.
Issues in the secondary are a little more uncertain. Corners Desmond Trufant and Justin Coleman had to leave last week’s game. Coleman has been put on injured reserve, while Trufant is expected to be in action. So is rookie Jeff Odukah, the third overall pick in the draft, who missed last week’s game but could actually be a starter here. Jamie Collins, a former Patriot who Patricia brought over, made contact with an official and got ejected against Chicago. He is fortunate that he was not hit with a suspension, and so are the Lions.
We say that because you really need all hands on deck against Rodgers. Perhaps last week’s outing (32-of-44, 364 yards) is final confirmation that he is comfortable in the scheme LaFleur (the former Rams’ offensive coordinator) laid out for him, although the more dramatic folks would probably say it’s his “statement” after they drafted Utah State’s Jordan Love. Well, if that’s the case, fine. We’re impressed with his ability to move it without star outlets other than Davante Adams.
We do admire one thing the Lions did last week – with 138 rushing yards, they at least are making their own statement, which is that maybe they are serious about establishing that element. Adrian Peterson had 93 yards, but they would like to see something out of DeAndre Swift (eight yards). if that doesn’t happen, and A.P. shows he’s old again, the Lions fill the air with footballs.
I guess it’s interesting that last season, with Green Bay on a path toward the NFC title game and Detroit on the road to nowhere (otherwise known as the ‘Nowhere Road’ – just ask Albert Brooks), the Packers won both meetings by a total of four points. And Dteroit has covered six consecutive meetings. So we are wary about laying points. But we feel good about an OVER in this game where the quarterbacks are easily capable of 350+ yards.
