Will it be the same old story with the Detroit Lions this season? Maybe. But at least they will have a fighting chance with their quarterback healthy. BetAnySports patrons will get a chance to see what happens as they face the Chicago Bears, another troubled team with a more troubling situation at quarterback. game time is 1 PM ET on Sunday at Ford Field in the Motor City.

The Lions are one of those franchises that is seemingly always in need of direction. As one of a handful of teams that has not been to a Super Bowl, their direction hasn’t been the right one. Ownership (the Ford family) is no doubt a part of the program. But there is the hope that sooner or later, somebody will come to the rescue. They figured Matt Patricia would sprinkle some “magic dust” from his days on the New England staff. But Bill Belichick’s assistants don’t necessarily do too well as head coaches.
Matthew Stafford missed eight games last season, and the Lions lost all of them en route to a 3-12-1 season. He’s got receivers; one of them is Kenny Golladay (1140 yards). With Marvin Jones and Danny Amendola, there’s balance. And we do hear the same old song about the Lions running the ball for a change; they drafted D’Andre Swift out of Georgia in the second round.
The Bears were interested in a quarterback upgrade and thought they might have one with the acquisition of Nick Foles, but Mitchell Trubisky has once again emerged as the starter. Chicago is, well, a work in progress offensively. And we’re not sure that Ted Ginn and Jimmie Graham are going to add the spark that is needed.
In the NFL odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Lions are laying points at home:
Detroit Lions -2.5 (-115)
Chicago Bears +2.5 (-105)
Over 42 points -110
Under 42 points -110
Detroit dealt away Darius Slay during the 2019 season, but they did go on a campaign to improve a defensive unit that was ranked 31st in the NFL last season. Patricia has been bringing people over who knew the system – the same one that was employed when he was at New England. Linebacker Jamie Collins, safety Duron Harmon and defensive tackle Danny Shelton should help. They have also added veteran cornerback Desmond Trufant. And the Lions took another corner, Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah, with the third overall pick.
Oddly, Trubisky has had much success against the Lions since Patricia took the reins. In three games, he has completed just under 75% of his passes, for 866 yards and a robust 9.5 yards per attempt. Part of the reason he’s been successful is that Patricia’s scheme – like the one the Pats use – does not call for a lot of blitzing. And thus he’s had more time in the pocket then against any other team he’s played. Pressure bothers Trubisky; if he doesn’t have to deal with as much, he’s going to have an easier time of it.
And let’s allow for the possibility that the Chicago defense is the best unit on the field in this game. They were a top ten side across the board, and now they have Robert Quinn on board as a nice pass rush partner for Khalil Mack. If the Lions once again give very little more than lip service to the idea of establishing a ground game (which they always fall into with Stafford at the helm), this won’t be a pleasant outing for Stafford. We know Detroit has the better “slinger,” but we’re more comfortable taking points.
